Choosing the Right Dog Food...

What is the best dog food?  Hundreds of anxious dog owners pose that question to veterinarians every day.  Every dog owner wants to make certain they are feeding their dog the best food availible.  Of course, the variety of dog foods, and the numerous views on dog diets can leave a dog owner very confused.  Which dog food is the best for my dog?  Where do I find the best dog food?  How do I know what is the best dog food diet?

It used to be that dogs were fed home made dog food.  Owners would cut up some meat, or vegetables, and feed it to the dog, every day.  Unfortunately, however, in today's world, we rarely have the time to fix ourselves a home cooked meal, let alone our canine companion.  Fortunately, there are countless varieties of commercial dog food.  The only question is... Which one to feed your dog?

dog foodCommerical/pre-packaged dog foods come in many forms.  Some are designed to provide balanced nutrition to a dog.  Some are designed to fit to a specific dietary need.  Almost all commercial dog foods - with good nutritional content - are made from natural and/or organic dry ingredients.  Although these prepacked meals can be a little expensive, in the long run, it often means lower veterinary bills, and fewer visits.

Some dog owners are simply unable to afford the cost of pre-packaged/commercial dog food.  In this case, the best option is to prepare dog food meals at home.  If you simply don't have the time, then you can try canned dog food.  Although canned dog food is often not as nutritious as the dry variety, canned dog food is readily accessible, and often inexpensive.

Where do you find the best dog foods?  At your local grocery store!  Yes, your local grocery store - along with your local veterinarian, local feed store, and local natural food store - carries several varieties of dog food.  Both canned and dry varieties are availible at your local stores.

Which dog food is the best?  Do some reasearch.  Talk to your verterinarian, or call the dog food manufacturers.  Most quality dog food manufacturers are willing to provide you with nutritional and dietary information, as well as heed your concern and inquiries.  If you're still not sure, call your veterinarian and spend some time discussing your dog's specific dietary needs.  Likely, your veterinarian will recommend a specific brand of dog food, tailored to the needs of your pooch.

Don't forget...  A dog need more than quality dog food.  Did you know that an adult dog's body is comprised of over 60% water?  A puppy's body can be an amazing 84% water.  Proper hydration and fluid intake is essential for your dog's health.  On top of making certain your dog has quality dog food, make certain your dog has plenty of water, too.
