Choosing the dog training method...

Dog Training.  Something almost every dog owner dreads.  Dog owners are continually asking me questions:  What is the best dog training method?  How should I obedience train my dog?  Should I use a professional dog trainer?  Can you recommend a good dog training resource? Do I need more than basic obedience training?

The answers?

What is the best dog training method? How should I train my dog?

There is no one right method for dog training.  Some people find the reward approach to be the best.  Some find the "no" approach to be the best.  Cesar Millan's methods come highly recommended.  You may have heard of Cesar Millan... The Dog Whisperer. Cesar is a world renown dog trainer, and his methods are second to none in approach, substance, and success.

Cesar's methods revolve around putting the dog into a calm, submissive state of mind; and ensuring that the dog sees its owner as the pack leader.  Cesar's dog training methods involve tough love, and recognizing when you need to implement the dog training, instead of giving in to your dog.

The "no" method of dog training, discussed above, is the most time honored way to train your dog.  By simply saying "no" in a firm tone of voice, and using a gentle tug on the leash, your dog will eventually understand that he is not to do those things. Many say that the "no" method of dog training causes the dog to come to resent its owners. Many more say that training your dog this way, especially from the puppy stage, is the only way. Personally, I prefer the Cesar Milan method of dog training, but it really boils down to what works for you.

Should I use a Professional Dog Trainer?

Training your dog, yourself, is highly recommended; however, if you feel it neccesary to bring in a professional trainer, then try to find one that will train your dog with you present. This will ensure that your dog learns to accept you giving the commands.  Your best option is to call your veterinarian and ask for a recommendation to a trainer.

Remember that your dog probably only needs basic obedience training, unless you are intending to make your dog a show dog.
